Before winter fully settles in, now is the perfect time to give your deck a quick checkup and some preventative care. A little attention today will go a long way in keeping your TruNorth or Clubhouse deck clean, durable, and great-looking when spring rolls back around.
Fall may be all about cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice, but it’s also your last real shot to get ahead of the freeze. Composite and PVC decking is built to handle tough Canadian and American winters, but taking a few simple steps now will help your deck stay looking its best without any surprises when the snow melts.
Why Does Pre-Winter Deck Care Matter?
Your composite deck won’t rot, warp, or splinter like traditional wood, but it’s still exposed to freeze and thaw cycles, moisture, and organic buildup all season. Trapped debris, poor airflow, and leftover grime are what lead to staining, mildew, and surface wear over time.
A quick fall cleanup can help prevent that, and it will make your spring reset way easier too.
Step 1: Clear Out the Gaps
Fallen leaves, pine needles, and dirt like to settle between boards. Once that gunk gets wet and freezes, it can create pressure that warps or stresses the board edges over time.
Use a broom, shop vac, or plastic scraper to clean out those gaps. Make sure any debris around posts or railings is cleared, and don’t forget to check areas near the house where buildup is easy to miss.
If you have mulch, soil, or landscaping up against the deck, pull it back slightly. Moisture resting against the boards or frame is a long-term stain risk, especially during freeze and thaw conditions.
Downspouts or splash guards should also be redirected away from the deck so you’re not sending runoff directly under your joists or frame.
Step 2: Give It a Quick Wash
Most TruNorth and Clubhouse decks only need a light wash twice a year, and fall is the perfect time for it.
Use a soft bristle broom or cloth and a bucket of warm water mixed with dish soap or one of these approved cleaners:
- Simple Green
- Murphy Oil Soap
- Dawn
- Windex
Scrub gently in the direction of the grain and rinse with a garden hose. If you’re using a power washer, be sure to:
- Use a fan tip nozzle
- Keep pressure under 1100 PSI
- Hold the nozzle at least 10 inches above the deck
Avoid harsh abrasives, rubber mats, or strong solvents. These can dull or stain the cap layer of your boards, especially once the weather warms up again.
Step 3: Raise Anything That Sits
If you’ve got planters, grills, patio furniture, or decorative items sitting directly on the boards, lift them up just a little, especially if they hold moisture.
Risers, spacers, or even rubber feet will allow airflow underneath and help prevent the staining, warping, or mildew that can form where water gets trapped. This also keeps your deck looking more polished all winter long.
Step 4: Check Your Fasteners
Fall is also a good time to take a look at your fasteners. Loose screws or shifting hidden clips can lead to movement as your deck expands and contracts with the weather. Secure anything that feels loose now before it gets harder to access under ice or snow.
If you’re finishing up a new install, double-check your spacing. Cold weather installations require slightly different board gaps based on temperature. Not sure what they are? Our install guide has all the details.
Step 5: Share Your Deck Before the Snow Falls
Fall is peak deck-photo season. Warm colors, crisp light, and clear surfaces make it the perfect time to show off your work or backyard space. Whether you’re a contractor documenting a new install or a homeowner enjoying that last patio dinner, take a shot before the snow comes.
